Since Jeep has long lacked a true adversary in the three-row passenger segment, competitors like the GMC Yukon, Infiniti QX80, Toyota Sequoia, and even the venerable Dodge Durango have been able to capture the market. But that's over. There is no need to wait any longer for those who want to transport eight persons in lavish comfort for less than $100,000.
Wagoneer ($80,995) and Grand Wagoneer ($106,290) are the two models that Jeep offers. The Grand Wagoneer is the more expensive and upmarket version of the same SUV with additional equipment and comforts, as the names and prices imply. Our review of that can be found here. But now that we're testing the less expensive Wagoneer, which ranges in price from $25,000 to $45,000 less depending on the trim, it never feels like a no-frills option, even in the lowest Series II model.
At the very least, not from the outside. Jeep has successfully updated its distinctive style into a sleek yet sculpted package. They are obviously aiming to position the Wagoneer series as a unique and different luxury offering if you take note of the fact that there are no Jeep logos whatsoever on the Wagoneer. Even the website, wagoneer.ca, has changed. When you first turn it on, the center touchscreen is the only place you'll see a Jeep emblem. Apart from the chromed-up front grill, it's also challenging to tell it apart from the Grand Wagoneer.
In comparison to a Dodge Durango, the inside is more luxurious and well-designed. The steering wheel is covered in supple leather, and even though plastics are everywhere, they are glossy, black, and ostensibly high-end. While there aren't as many digital screens (many of which are still optional) or as much wood veneer as in the Grand Wagoneer, Jeep has obviously chosen not to play the excess game and has instead stuck to the necessities and done so admirably. We think buyers will find it to be more than sufficient.
Excellently padded chairs provide a high, commanding stance from which to take in the wide view in front. Although the windowsill isn't flat or wide enough for your other arm to rest comfortably like in a Range Rover, a well-placed armrest ensures maximum comfort. Notably, we saw that several of the driving aids functioned reasonably well, however the Active Lane Management feature may be enhanced. Instead of keeping the SUV in the middle of the lane, it keeps weaving it from side to side and from lane marker to lane marker. Only after you have already crossed the lines does it appear to fix the steering.
We were particularly surprised by the Wagoneer's courteous and careful driving style. Even though it weighs 2,807 kg, the SUV is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 that generates 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque to keep it moving. Nothing less than a V8 would likely perform well in this situation, and its impressive towing capability of 4,535 kg (10,000 lbs) is another plus. The engine feels sprightly under acceleration but lacks the same punch as the Range Rover's turbocharged V8. The engine is supported by an e-torque hybrid system that smooths out the drivetrain and 8-speed gearbox transitions.
It sounds better than the rival inline-sixes and hybrid four-cylinders and generates a hearty exhaust boom with every throttle thrust. To get additional power, one must upgrade to the Grand Wagoneer, which has a more formidable 6.4-litre V8. Notably, the Wagoneer series will get a twin-turbocharged inline-six named the Hurricane later this year, but we don't believe it will get better fuel economy than our 16.8 L/100km with the Wagoneer. As a solace, the V8 comes with cylinder deactivation to further reduce fuel consumption when the power needs are low and does not require premium 91-octane fuel.
Large 22-inch shoes covered in Goodyear Eagle Touring all-season rubber and an adjustable air suspension help the Wagoneer ride remarkably well. It neutralizes minor and big suspension movements better than the Grand Cherokee, but not quite as well as a Land Rover Defender due to its nicely damped suspension with a comfort-focused design. It doesn't feel awkward in the slightest and its chassis doesn't behave erratically when it hits bumps and potholes. The Wagoneer consistently maintains a firm footing.
It has off-roading capabilities as well, although we were unable to test this. Even though we did see some severe snowstorms, the Wagoneer had incredible traction because to its skilled traction and stability control systems and ABS. Additionally oriented toward rear-wheel drive, you can help rotation by just applying additional power. In such adverse weather conditions, it gave us a ton of confidence, making us wonder how much better it would be with real winter tires.
With its more potent V8 engine, great cabin polish, and extensive use of wood and chrome patterns, the Grand Wagoneer is worth the extra money, but the Wagoneer is already so well-equipped that you get eight tenths of the experience for a fraction of the cost. In actuality, the Grand Wagoneer offers primarily aesthetic and visual appeal, but we wouldn't think twice to suggest either as a lavish people-hauling partner.
