PHEVs, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, have been around for a while. They have a traditional internal combustion engine and can travel double-digit distances without emitting any emissions thanks to an electric motor and batteries. And the engine just takes over when the battery runs out. They collaborate for both performance and efficiency reasons. There is no need for fast charging, range anxiety, or worry. There are PHEVs available on the BMW X5, Volvo XC90, Range Rover Sport, Lexus NX, and even the MINI Countryman, making it a popular means of power for premium SUVs.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the newest member of the group. The 4xe promises to be the most efficient of the group, delivering 42 km of electric-only range and a sizable fuel tank that increases the total driving range to about 800 km. V6 and V8 powertrains are also available.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that powers the 4xe produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque on its own. The 4xe has an all-wheel drive system, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and an electric motor that generates 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when combined with a 14.0 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Although acceleration is respectable with a full battery, it does not seem quite as powerful as the 470 lb-ft number claims. The hefty curb weight of 2,435 kg is probably to blame for this. Forward thrust is significantly more sluggish in full electric mode, necessitating the use of the engine for maneuvers on the freeway or at triple-digit speeds. The V6-powered version of the Grand Cherokee has more life, as the electric motor just doesn't seem to make up for the two-cylinder shortage.
The shift from engine to electricity is also not as smooth as I had imagined. When switching between the two modes, we noticed jerkiness and harshness, but we believe a few software updates will iron out the wrinkles. The four-cylinder engine also doesn't quite fit the Grand Cherokee's premium image because it makes an unflattering noise when it starts up, thrashing like a diesel on a cold start.
In Canada's single-digit temperatures, we averaged 35 km of electric range with a full battery, which isn't too far off from the official 42 km figure. We only got 14.5 L/100 km from the gasoline engine, which isn't very fuel-efficient given that the V8 we had a few months ago wasn't all that much less efficient. However, as most consumers are likely to leave it plugged in overnight, this statistic is irrelevant.
The ride is more brittle while driving than I would have anticipated from a chassis with an air suspension. While it does a better job of successfully neutralizing massive vibrations, the 18-inch tires do transfer little vertical oscillations up into the seat. The Mercedes GLE and BMW X5 excel in terms of road compliance, while the 4xe is a comfortable vehicle and a capable road fighter.
It's important to highlight that the brakes are effective and that the switchable regenerative braking technology performs remarkably well, absorbing all available energy and quickly rerouting it to the battery. It has a low learning curve and is sufficient to lessen right foot strain but is insufficient for one-pedal driving and there are no levels of regen available.
The 4xe is identical to the ordinary Grand Cherokee on the inside and out. It's one of the most attractive Jeeps to date, with recognizable yet updated styling that stays true to its distinctive design. Without the seven-slot grill, it wouldn't be a Jeep, and this time around the lines are crisper while still being powerful enough to command some road presence.
Although the switchgear and panels lack the high look and finish that this segment deserves, the inside is jam-packed with amenities and technologies, and Jeep consistently provides an excellent user interface system. The UConnect infotainment system operates as seamlessly and without latency as the most recent iPhone. Jeep also made a point of keeping authentic dials and buttons. We value this sparing use of digital space because it keeps the learning curve short and makes every interaction user-friendly.
The instrument cluster and center screen both have 10.1-inch displays, while the 10.25-inch touchscreen on the passenger-side dashboard is a segment first. While it could appear to be a gimmick, this feature, which is comparable to those in Ferraris and the Porsche Taycan, gives a great lot of ease for passenger inputs.
The 4xe still merits a closer look for those without a long commute or those who can fully utilize the modest but situationally effective electric range, while the V8 is an appealing war drum for those who demand instant power and aren't too concerned with fuel economy. The V6-powered Grand Cherokee is still our pick of the litter. There is now a Grand Cherokee to fit every sort of SUV shopper, including those trying to lessen their carbon footprint. It is better to have too many options than too few.
