There is a workaround if you desire a BMW M3 but detest the front grill's beaver-tooth design. This BMW X3 M Competition resembles an M3 SUV in many respects.
Similar to the M3, it boasts a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, but for 2022, output has been increased to 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft, a gain of 37 lb-ft. The X3 M Competition now sprints from 0-100 km/h in a mind-blowing 3.8 seconds when equipped with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission, three-tenths faster than before thanks to the increased torque. The xDrive system has upgraded interior switchgear, larger brakes, a retuned suspension, and new front styling in addition to the ability to transmit 100% of power to the rear wheels.
We've also never seen an X3 with a finer specification on the road. Urban Green appears to be a lighter version of a camouflage-style green. The BMW's Army Green is fairly comparable to the Autumn Green on the Subaru Outback or the Toyota 4Runner's Army Green, but the BMW's is more richer in tone and has more layers of paint. When you're already spending north of six figures on a car, you might as well make it unique, and BMW's wide range of color options means you don't have to settle for a generic, rental, or re-sale standard. For $3,900, it's worth checking out.
On paper, everything sounds great, but does it truly translate to an enjoyable M3 driving experience? Absolutely. The X3 M Competition moves ridiculously fast. The advantage of a straight-six engine is that it loves to rev but is also smooth as silk, which results in a furious acceleration the instant the throttle is lightly depressed. The V6s and V8s are so unpolished in comparison that none of the engines in this group even come close.
Although we never lacked for power or acceleration, we did wish the exhaust was louder. This car's soundtrack isn't as loud or reverberant as the M3, possibly because of the differing exhaust and the driver's proximity to it. Although less loudly, it shouts in the same baritone frequency. While the 7,200 rpm is still thrilling, it doesn't have the same sense of occasion as, for example, a supercharged Jaguar F-PACE SVR V8 or the bass of an AMG V8. not even the V6's seductive resonance in the Alfa.
These fast SUVs have an incredibly rigid ride, as we observed on our most recent drive with the 2020 X3 M and 2021 X4 M. BMW claims that this time, for 2022, they made it more compliant, but we couldn't tell a change, much alone any subtle differences between the suspension settings. No matter if you're in Comfort or Sport+, it feels harsh on any surface other than a smooth one. In reality, operating the X3 M gets demanding after a while since the wheels trundle over every bump and nook they come across, to the point where you consciously dodge potholes as you would in one of those free-to-play phone games.
On the other hand, it has excellent cornering behavior. The front end is so rigid that it is ready to turn at any time, and it is supported by gripping Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires. The X3 M is consequently more nimble than a Macan, quicker than a Stelvio, and more practical than a GLC 63 S. With a raised ride height and a little bit more body roll, it actually rotates like an all-wheel drive M3. You can never disguise the fact that it is an SUV, yet it manages its inherent weight disadvantages to produce this kind of handling, which is nothing short of astounding. Along with that, it also allows you to maintain it with some simple power-on oversteer while being eager to kick out its rear end for some entry-corner drifts. Although the X3 M's steering is slightly sedated and numb, there is still enough of driver involvement.
Instead, those seeking a softer ride might consider the X3 M40i, which is less expensive but also less demanding on the driver. If you want a quick, capable daily driver without any trade-offs, go with the X3. The M, meanwhile, is designed for people who want the M3's flavor in their daily lives but don't want an SUV's garish front grill.
