The sport sedan "coupe" that started it all is the CLS. That is to say, the CLS's sloped roof and coupe-like silhouette, much like the BMW X6, have paved the way for a completely new segment of four-door sedans. Think BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and the Audi A7. The CLS served as its foundation. Even some cross-pollination with the company's own GT 53 AMG has been sparked.
The CLS shape is undeniably attractive and striking, despite concerns that functionality may have been sacrificed due to styling restrictions. We consider the vertical-slat front grill to be one of the most recognizable design elements in the history of contemporary automobiles because it has come to be associated with the AMG brand. We've even seen aftermarket versions of that grill installed on older Mercedes models because everyone wants it, and we don't blame them. At least from the front end, it has a stunning road presence. The CLS 53's rear is much more tapered, featuring four exhaust outlets that emerge from the bumper and a roofline that seamlessly blends into the acutely angled trunk lid. We believe the sharper CLS is one of the most mature-looking AMGs on the road, especially as many other Mercedes models, such as the E-Class and S-Class, become softer in appearance.
We adore the cabin aesthetics, which is typical of Mercedes. The interior is a feast for the senses. Compared to its rivals, it has more drama, pizazz, and plush leather surfaces. The rest of the switchgear is upscale, but the column-mounted gear stalk still has a cheap feel to it. Although the ergonomics haven't really improved and the haptic touchpad still occasionally frustrates us because it never seems to highlight what we wanted in the convoluted menu system, the new, five-spoke AMG steering wheel is a showpiece deserving of its own paragraph. However, the paddle shifters have a premium feel to them and provide that crisp metal feedback when pressed. The two dials that control the driving mode and settings have been upgraded in terms of both quality and sturdiness, and they no longer have the impression of having been hastily glued on.
The more we use the MBUX system, the more frustrated we become with its confusing user interface. The steering wheel buttons, the center trackpad, and voice control are all available as input options, but none of them feel as quick, precise, or user-friendly as a straightforward rotary dial like those found in BMW and Genesis models. And it should come as no surprise that the CLS 53's rear seat space is constrained. Due to the roof line's slope, there is terrible headroom, and we must hunch our necks to prevent our hair from constantly changing styles. Keep in mind that these are the non-negotiable consequences of these slanted, sexy coupes as you comparison shop.
however, because driving is what this AMG is all about, let's move on. Although the CLS 53 has two fewer cylinders than its V8 rivals, its 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six still packs a powerful punch. Its pairing with an electric compressor and a mild hybrid system known as EQ Boost by Mercedes gives it a special quality. It gives the CLS a battery that can power the vehicle's electronics, work as an alternator and starter motor, enable the vehicle to coast without the transmission while moving quickly, and produce an additional 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque that acts as a bridge to reduce turbo lag.
With all hands on deck, the CLS 53 will accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.5 seconds, despite the straight-healthy six's 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque on its own. Although there is some acceleration, it is not excessive. Although using the paddles to take the wheel adds another level of driver involvement, the BMW M850i does not provide the same level of road control or involvement due to its numb steering and clumsier ride.
There is a reason why rival BMW has maintained its long-standing preference for straight-six engines. At any point in the powerband, they feel refined, exhibit powerful yet linear power delivery, and are inherently smooth. The CLS 53 begins to dance in an upbeat rhythm thanks to Mercedes' engine, which is clearly lacking in their grainy V6 powerplants. The entire combustion and electrical symphony play in perfect harmony, with no discernible turbo lag.
The 9-speed gearbox, the weakest link in the drivetrain, is what, however, seems to chip that layer of polish. This is especially noticeable during rolling stops or when creeping to a stop, when the engine cuts off and the electric motors engage, and there is a delay when you command it to wake back up. It never seems to engage a gear properly if you're unsure on the gas or brake pedal. These situations frequently result in a disconnect in the powertrain. The clutch once refused to bite as we attempted to accelerate as the light turned green, leaving us stuck revving foolishly until, five seconds later, it finally bit and we took off. We were unable to duplicate the peculiar one-off circumstance.
In comparison to earlier CLS models, the suspension is more forgiving. This time, it doesn't crash as hard and is softer and more compliant. Although the ride has some edge to it, it still manages to muffle the worst flaws in the road surface. It's not an S-Class and it doesn't have the same level of comfort on the road as an M850i or an RS6 Avant, but it's getting there. Additionally, the CLS has a small turning circle and exhibits a respectable amount of cornering agility when thrown around, but not enough to make you forget about its sizable weight and footprint.
The CLS 53 hasn't lost any of its appeal since first breaking new ground in the segment, despite the obvious drawbacks of reduced cabin and trunk space. What it lacks in usability and ergonomics, it makes up for with breathtaking good looks and a luxurious interior. There is charm and engagement in this Mercedes despite its deliberate flaws, including a weak gearbox and a six-cylinder engine that lacks the thrill of its V8 counterparts.
