It is simple to believe that big displacement V8 engines are going extinct given the record-high oil prices and the public's interest in anything electric. The exact opposite is true, as pick-up trucks are still the most popular cars in North America.
These powerful V8 engines are also featured in the two most recent GMC Sierra models under review, and we had the chance to test the most recent AT4X and Denali Ultimate trims' off-road and on-road performance.
Here in Canada, GMC is the truck brand that is expanding the fastest, with shares rising from 16% to 18% only last year. The Sierra 1500 is available in numerous configurations, cabs, and forms. Pro, SLE, Elevation, and SLT models can be ordered in regular cab, double cab, or crew cab configurations with cargo beds that are available in short (69.92 inch), standard (79.44 inch), and long (89.44 inch) lengths in addition to 2WD or 4WD versions (98.20 in). Despite the massive spread, you can relax because both the AT4X and Denali Ultimate are only offered as crew cab, short beds. The starting MSRP for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X and Denali Ultimate is $87,248 and $90,763, respectively. If the latter is equipped with a V8 engine rather than a diesel engine, the price jumps to $95,148.
The Denali Ultimate is the Cadillac of Sierras and includes a long list of high-end features as standard equipment, such as a 12-speaker Bose surround sound system, front seats with 16-way power adjustments, a leather-wrapped dashboard and door panels, and 22-inch gloss black aluminum wheels. Full-grain leather seats with double-needle stitching, a microsuede headliner, sun visors, and pillars are carried over from the Denali. On the Denali and Denali Ultimate, the Carbonpro box is an option. The availability of Super Cruise, a $2,610 topping, is last but certainly not least.
If convenience and opulence are top priorities for you, the Ultimate is a great choice. One of the most opulently furnished cabins you will ever find in a pickup. To fully appreciate how the leather-wrapped dashboard accentuates itself with genuine Vanta ash wood trim, you must touch and feel all of the surfaces. On the glovebox, there is a topographic map of Mount Denali etched into the wood, and there is a more than 40-inch digital display (when you also take into account the 15-inch head-up display). However, the 13.4-inch infotainment screen's customizability and the 12.4-inch instrument cluster's inclusion of Google Maps, Google Play, and Google Assistant are noteworthy.
For some, the layout of the screens, climate control, and physical controls occupying the center console may feel too conventional, but in my opinion, it performs better than vehicles claiming to be Teslas. Autonomous hands-free driving is without a doubt the most, if not the most, revolutionary feature of today's cars in terms of driver assistance features. GM's Super Cruise was the industry's first semi-autonomous driving technology, and it is still, happily, the same on the 2018 Cadillac CT6. Super Cruise enables hands-free driving on more than 300,000 km of compatible roads in the United States and Canada.
The first non-Cadillac vehicle to use Super Cruise is the GMC Sierra. It can even change lanes on its own or with the driver's assistance. Super Cruise will scan the adjacent lanes and determine whether it is safe for your Sierra to make a lane change if the car in front of you is moving more slowly than the speed you have set. If everything goes according to plan, it will turn on your Sierra's turn signal and move it to the faster lane, but it will also move it back to the right slow lane when it thinks it's time. Additionally, GMC has elevated adaptive cruise control to a level that no other pickups have achieved: towing while using Super Cruise. To provide an unmatched towing experience, all drawbacks of towing, such as drag and longer stopping distances, are taken into account. You can select from Transparent Trailer, Rear Trailer, or Inside Trailer Views on additional display screens provided by a $610 Auxiliary Trailer Camera.
Owners of the Sierra Denali Ultimate will prefer hosting a tailgate party to getting their back massaged while sitting inside their cabin. By itself, the Carbonpro carbon-fiber composite bed is impressive. Music will literally and figuratively flow into your ears through the fancy six function MultiPro tailgate's two 50 watts per channel Kicker speakers. Regardless of how frequently the transformer tailgate would be used, workhorses frequently receive the same treatment as show ponies.
It's not necessary to go into detail about the modifications that turn the AT4 into an AT4X, but suffice it to say that they give the Sierra access to an entirely new range of off-road capabilities. Comparable upgrades to the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 are made to the AT4X, including performance Multimatic DSSV shocks, front and rear electronic differential locks, off-road drive modes, 18-inch Goodyear DuraTrac all-terrain tires, and underbody metal shields.
In my more than 30 years of writing, I've gone off-roading a lot. Notable locations include British Columbia's Whistler and Ontario's Bon Echo and Algonquin provincial parks. However, I've never been in a quarry like the Randy Noble and Meredith Chandler pit on Manitoulin Island. That is where AT4X's ability to handle any terrain was tested. There's really no terrain the AT4X can't handle with up to eight different drive modes available: 2Hi, Auto, 4Hi, 4Low, Terrain-4L, 4L front e-lock, 4L rear e-lock, and 4L front rear locks. The challenge we were all looking for was how to get it stuck because the muddy and rocky pit is no walk in the park. Our deeply buried left rear wheel was easily freed with just a quick press of the rear e-locker switch, which is found under the climate control panel. The 33-inch DuraTrac tires were successfully bounced off the long-travel suspension by the DSSV dampers. It never failed to impress with its capability to cushion hard landings without bottoming out.
Surprisingly, the AT4X has a 6.2-liter V8 engine as standard, as opposed to the Denali Ultimate, which has a 3.0-litre Duramax turbodiesel six-cylinder. The V8 has undergone many changes, including the addition of a new Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) system that uses 17 different firing modes and can shut down as many as six cylinders in response to the driver's need for torque. In my three days of driving, I was unable to determine how many cylinders were operating at any given time because DFM operates under a variety of conditions.
With a 10-speed automatic transmission, the large displacement V8 can produce up to 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Although the diesel engine has 143 fewer horsepower than the gasoline engine, it has an equal amount of torque. Despite its excellent fuel efficiency, I strongly advise choosing the V8 engine over the diesel. The 2021 Cadillac Escalade Diesel we drove in November was noisy and clattered, which was disappointing.
In order to further set the Sierra apart from the Silverado, GM has finally spent all of its money, and both the AT4X and Denali Ultimate show off what a high-end pickup has to offer. We've never been as impressed by a truck's handling and both on- and off-road capabilities, and we finally understand why they continue to be North America's preferred type of vehicle. It also has plenty of amenities and creature comforts.
