Genesis is making headway in their ambitious project to upend the luxury auto market. This is their newest model, the GV60, an all-electric SUV with a range of up to 399 km, a ton of zero-emission horsepower, an all-inclusive price of $71,150, and an equally opulent interior.
If you want to outperform the best, learn from the best, as the GV60 has done. Their designers and engineers were able to appropriate ideas from the industry's forerunners—or, if you prefer, to be inspired by them—and skilfully combined each successful feature into a small SUV. It's no accident that many of the GV60's noteworthy gadgets and gizmos feel comfortable.
Similar to an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the pop-out door handles operate in the same way. The steering wheel's circular design is obviously influenced by MINI. The yellow dial on the steering wheel that says "Boost" is identical to the Sport Response switch on a Porsche. the switch for modifying shortcuts? Audi. That tactile touchpad on the spoke of the steering wheel? The dual infotainment screens are also directly from Mercedes. BMW's rotary dial. Audi speaker grills by Bang & Olufsen. We could go on forever, but the fact remains that Genesis skillfully combined them for a comfortable and useful user experience.
The GV60, the company's first fully electric car, is naturally based on the same platform as the kinship Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6, so the packaging and dimensions will be recognizable. Speaking of sharing and borrowing, the GV60 is the brand's first fully electric car. A 77.4 kWh lithium-ion battery with two output options is concealed beneath that packaging. The GV60 Advanced has a 399 km range, 314 hp, and 446 lb-ft of torque. With 429 horsepower and an overboost feature, the more potent GV60 Performance ups the ante to 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque for ten seconds. The Performance's range, however, is reduced to 378 km.
The GV60 Performance AWD that we tested performed flawlessly on open roads. Compared to rival EVs like the Volvo C40 Recharge, the suspension is nicely damped and more comfortable, but it is less engaging and agile when cornering quickly. With that typical EV thrust, acceleration is powerful and almost dizzying. This should be more than enough for any type of driver, heavy-footed or not, especially in Boost Mode, which functions much like an electric NOS button. The transition back, however, can become a little choppy once the ten seconds are up, similar to a sudden deceleration jerk. Nothing that a software modification can't resolve.
The GV60 has ambitious styling that has succeeded while being smaller than the GV70 and GV80. The appealing side silhouette and perky rear end make us think of the similarly alluring Range Rover Evoque. However, the GV60's interior is what makes us prefer it to the more subdued and stark Volvo C40 Recharge.
The dashboard is dominated by two large 12.3-inch displays, upscale switchgear, excellent fit and finish, and a fixed panoramic roof that doesn't open but lets a lot of light inside. The primary material used here is leather. An easy-to-use user interface and lag-free menus make the infotainment system function well. Genesis bravely adopted the rotary dial function after BMW perfected it. The haptic pads on the steering wheel, which are similar to those in Mercedes, also work well in theory, but because they are so close to the grips, it is too simple to accidentally swipe at them and have them register an input when turning the wheel. This means that occasionally, when we would take a turn, the radio station would change suddenly and inconveniently, diverting our attention from the road.
It stands out from the crowd and is more attractive than the Orrefors crystal shifters found in top-trim Volvos. We assume it's a feature that will spread to the other Genesis vehicles. The GV60 comes equipped with the majority of contemporary creature comforts and conveniences, such as rear window sunshades and remote parking, but the price tag of $71,150 is still difficult to swallow.
The headrests on the seats are what we can't stand. They are fixed in place so far forward that your neck always rests in front of your shoulders and cannot be moved fore or aft. No matter what we did, the ride was never quiet and isolated; we always sat hunched and could never find a comfortable seating arrangement. The only solution was to completely remove the headrest, but we decided against doing so due to safety reasons. a deal-killer? Absolutely, so before making a final decision, we suggest test driving or at the very least sitting in a GV60 to determine whether the seating position is comfortable for you.

Not knowing where our car is at all times is also a deal-breaker. In Ontario, car thefts have been on the rise, making it seem unsafe to simply leave your car unattended. Because of this, we constantly advise getting a miTrail vehicle tracker, especially in a high-end car like the GV60. It's a straightforward gadget that connects to the OBD11 port on the car, and you can use a computer or smartphone to track its location in real-time. The GV60 is an astounding accomplishment for a first attempt. It's even more impressive when used as a standalone EV product. The driving range is more than sufficient for the typical daily commute, and since Toronto's EV infrastructure is slowly catching up, it's now simpler than ever to stop by a nearby station for a quick top-up. Even though we still advise installing a dedicated home charger, not everyone has that luxury, including those who live in condos. Although we still have some concerns about the peculiar seating arrangement, overall, the GV60 is a properly opulent five-seater experience that brings together the best of what is available in a single, well-rounded offering.
